“Tiger Tank” Competitor Hatches Winning WIC App

Every year, Kellogg Company holds a “Tiger Tank” competition inviting employees to present their great ideas to Kellogg leadership as a business endeavor. It’s similar to the TV Show “Shark Tank”—and just as competitive! We’re proud to say that Kellogg Nutrition team member Melanie Hall’s revamped WIC app was the winner.

On average, 40 percent of WIC cereal vouchers go unused. Moms say they forget to purchase cereal or can’t find it in the store. Sometimes, the specific brand is out-of-stock or moms need ideas for using cereal in meals beyond breakfast.

Melanie’s goal was to boost redemption rates by improving the WICShopper App already used in 14 states. She teamed up with the app developer and the State of Michigan WIC staff to enhance the app to help WIC recipients:

• Improve redemption and usage of food benefits

• Know they have unredeemed food benefits available

• Use new recipes on the app, customized to use foods not yet redeemed

• Use the barcode scanner on the app to be sure they’re choosing WIC-approved foods

The new-and-improved app features engaging videos, more than 99 new recipes and special content designed to increase end-of-the-month purchases of unredeemed food benefits. To keep content fresh, Melanie is working with Michigan WIC staff to review user engagement and devise new recipe ideas.

The enhanced WICShopper app launched in April. We’re tracking its effectiveness, so stay tuned for updates on its APP-eal to WIC recipients!

July is National Berry Month

Here’s a surprising stat: less than 10% of cereal is enjoyed with fruit.* Celebrate National Berry Month by encouraging clients to pair cereal with their favorite berries.

For an easy, nutritious cereal-berry combo, suggest our Strawberry Banana Parfait, layered with luscious strawberries, banana, Kellogg's® Special K® Cereal Original, and yogurt.
